Predicted Global Smartphone Shipment to Decline this Year, but Expected to Recover in the Future

Basing on the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) report, there will be a decline in global smartphone shipments this year due to weak economic conditions and high inflation. The latest projection states that we will see a decrease of 3.2%, which is much higher than the February prediction of 1.1%. It is estimated that 1.17 billion smartphones will be shipped this year. However, there is a positive side, as smartphone shipments are expected to recover next year. IDC predicts that smartphone shipments will increase by 6% compared to the previous year in 2024. According to the IDC, consumer demand is recovering at a slower pace than predicted by analysts.

Ryan Reith, IDC’s Vice President for Mobility and Consumer Device Tracker, also spoke about foldable smartphones. He said that as more foldable phones are present in the market, it is a positive step, but unfortunately, it happened at the wrong time.

The IDC also predicts that smartphone shipments will increase in 2025, 2026, and 2027. The company even estimates that smartphone shipments will reach almost 1.4 billion in 2027.

So, not everything is as gloomy as it seems. This year may not be the best year for several reasons, but improvements are expected in the coming years. Based on IDC’s predictions, we can expect at least four years of smartphone market growth after 2023.

Foldable phones will undoubtedly play a role in this. It is a new device category that is exciting, and more are coming into the market. In the next few years, we can expect rollable phones to be present as well.

We hope that IDC’s prediction will come true, although nothing is guaranteed, of course. Everything can change, and we have to wait and see how further developments unfold.
